- 2 cups chickpeas uncooked
- 4 cups water to soak chickpeas over night/8 hours
- 1 onion chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped
- 1 tsp crushed black pepper
- 1/2 tsp red pepper powder/paprika
- 1 tsp salt adjust to taste
- 1 tbsp cumin/coriander powder mix
- 1 cup flat leaf parsley chopped
- 2 tbsp all purpose flour
- 3 cups veg/cooking oil
In a large bowl soak uncooked chickpeas in ample water. Cover and set aside overnight.
Next morning or after at least 8 hours drain the water, set aside.
In a food processor add all the ingredients including chick peas except for cooking oil.
Use the pulse button to coarsely grind the mixture. We don't want it to be smooth like a paste.
Remove mixture from food processor to a bowl, cover with plastic shrink wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
After 2 hours remove mixture from fridge and using a ice cream scoop start making round balls. Once done heat veg.oil in frying pan.
Once oil is hot reduce flame to low and start deep frying the falafel balls 3 at a time. Do not crowd the pan by too many at once. Fry for about 3 to 4 minutes per batch of 3, turning them as each side becomes and crisp.
Once done transfer to rack so that the excess oil drips off the falafel balls.
Wallah! Our falafel is ready to be assembled in a sandwich. Warm a pita bread in microwave for 15 seconds, cut in 2 pcs with a kitchen scissor. Open pita bread and layer onions & tomatoes at the bottom. Next add 3 falafel balls, drizzle with Tahini sauce, chili sauce, garnish with chopped parsley.
Your falafel is ready to be served/devoured!
Falafel Recipe Notes:
Please do not used cooked canned chickpeas or your falafel will start falling apart during frying and taste like mush!
Falafel can be eaten by itself or as a pita sandwich. It is sure to be a crowd pleaser whether you serve it as an appetizer or main course!
